PlayStation made a brief appearance at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in the least expected way, taking players by surprise. The appearance probably surprised Sony as well since it came out of the left field, dragging the company into the Kendrick Lamar-Drake beef.
Kendrick Lamar-Drake beef ends with PlayStation at Super Bowl LIX
Lamar put an end to his feud with Drake at the halftime show by flashing the words ‘Game Over’ followed by PlayStation’s iconic symbols. Players were both surprised and amused, and the internet was immediately littered with posts and memes.
“The [PSN] downtime the day before was just marketing for this moment,” joked one player. “Sony playing 10D holographic Chinese chess.”
“Sony outage withdrawals got Lamar,” joked another.
Some folks mistook the PlayStation symbols with those seen in Squid Game, and remained convinced that the easter egg was referring to the show. However, Squid Game symbols do not include an X (Sony’s lawyers would probably be dragging Netflix to court in that case).
Jokes aside, Sony certainly won’t mind the free marketing here. Anything official would have cost the company a pretty penny.
