Programming tools similar to VisualBasic6

I'm starting to teach my kids programming. To keep it interesting for them, I was hoping to be able to use some language wherein they can easily & quickly create simple GUIs and program some actions. In the "good 'ol days" I would have used VB6 for this. Which programming languages/environments today would be similar to the sorts of things VB6 could do? I see that there is a CE for Delphi, but I've always hated that vendor so would prefer to avoid. I also thought of using VBA inside MS Excel (which allows for basic form designs), but this does seem fairly limited in terms of what it let's you create.
