The controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows has Ubisoft working with Canadian authorties to deploy employee protection measures, according to a new report. Following some delays, the game is scheduled to launch this week on Thursday, March 20.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows controversy comes at a particularly difficult time for Ubisoft
AC Shadows has been mired in controversy since it was unveiled, chief among which is its use of a black protagonist — Yasuke — in a Japanese setting, and his status as a samurai in history. The game has already attracted quite a lot of negative chatter online at a time when the political atmosphere around the globe is particularly overcharged.
As a result, Ubisoft and Canadian authorities are anticipating harassment campaigns against AC Shadows developers, and are putting together a system in place to tackle abuse. That’s according to French news outlet BFMTV.
An employee told the news publication that Ubisoft has urged developers to avoid disclosing their job roles on social media. The company allegedly has lawyers prepared to take action where necessary, and will offer “psychological and legal support” to those impacted.
BFMTV’s report also mentions that employees are concerned about AC Shadows’ market performance as well. Ubisoft has been in a financial turmoil for quite a while following a series of commercial flops, and a lot hinges on AC Shadows doing well.
“If Shadows sells very well, we can start to breathe a little,” the employee said.
