New PS2 Classic Comes Without Free Upgrade for Existing Owners

When Sony rereleases its PS1 and PS2 classics to PS5, it usually allows owners who owned an older version on PS3 or PS4 to upgrade it to the new version at no additional cost. However, it seems one of the newest additions to PlayStation’s classic catalog does not have a free upgrade.

Previous War of the Monsters owners won’t get a free PS5 upgrade

The game in question is War of the Monsters, an action game that was originally released on the PS2 in 2003. It was recently ported to PS5 this month, bringing the monster action to a modern PlayStation platform. However, players who previously owned the game on PS3 have been unable to upgrade to the new version for free. We can also confirm that this is currently the case with the new port.

This is a pretty peculiar scenario considering how Sony has handled upgrades for its previous PS1 and PS2 classics. Typically, players who previously owned an older version of the port can upgrade to the new PS5 version at no additional cost. One of the most recent examples of this is Siren, the PS2 survival horror game written and directed by Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of Silent Hill.

It is currently unknown if Sony will change it so previous owners of War of the Monsters can get a free upgrade for the PS5 version.

War of the Monsters was added to the PS Plus Premium’s classic catalog this month, along with Alone in the Dark 2. For both Premium and Extra subscribers, Blue Prince, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape 2, Hogwarts Legacy, EA Sports PGA Tour, Battlefield 1, and PlateUp! were added to the subscription service.

For players who do not already own it, War of the Monsters is available for PS4 and PS5 on the PS Store for $9.99.
