OnePlus confirms plans to eventually ditch the alert slider

One of the more unique features of OnePlus (and Oppo) phones is the alert slider. This is a slider that lets users switch between different alert modes, saving users time from having to go through the software settings. However, it looks like OnePlus will ditch the hardware feature in its future phones.

In a post on the OnePlus Community website, the company’s co-founder Pete Lau revealed that OnePlus is planning to move away from the alert slider to a customizable button. “Making this decision wasn’t easy for me either. When the team first came to me with a proposal to make a change to our alert slider, I was skeptical, just like some of you might be feeling right now. It is a bold move, and not everyone was convinced. But I knew that if we wanted to build something truly better, we had to take this leap.”

At the moment, the latest OnePlus phone still uses the alert slider. However, based on Lau’s comments, the next iteration might not. The customizable button sounds similar to Apple’s Action Button which it introduced in the iPhone 15. It allows users to customize it depending on their needs, whether they want to use it to switch between ring or silent mode, launch an app, and so on.

This sounds like something OnePlus is looking to do. We’re not sure how OnePlus will implement this customizable button, but Lau is soliciting feedback on the forums. So, if you have an idea of what the button should do, let OnePlusk know!
