As if Siri’s inability to perform the most basic tasks wasn’t bad enough, it looks like Apple has to fork out $95 million to settle a lawsuit. This is over a claim that Siri spied on iPhone users, and Apple is shelling out $95 million to put that class action lawsuit to bed.
Apple settles Siri spying lawsuit
So, are you eligible for these damages? If you own a Siri-enabled device, like an iPhone or iPad, between the 17th of September, 2014, and the 31st of December, 2024, chances are you can claim these damages. This is as long as you encountered an instance where Siri accidentally activated itself. If you are eligible, congrats—you earned yourself up to $100. It’s a paltry sum considering the privacy implications, but hey, free money, right?
The lawsuit was actually settled earlier this year. Apple released a statement saying, “Siri has been engineered to protect user privacy from the beginning. Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles, and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose.”
The original lawsuit was filed back in 2019. It was based on reports that Apple hired contractors to listen to Siri audio recordings from accidental activations. Apple claimed it was part of a quality control program. The company maintains its innocence in this, but it agreed to settle the lawsuit to avoid further litigation. Apple also insists that Siri data has never been sold to third parties, nor has it been used for advertising.
In the same year, Apple paused the program and stopped using contractors. The firm also released an update that allows users to remove Siri data and shield recordings from analysis.
How to claim your Siri damages
If you own a Siri-enabled device, like an iPhone, how do you claim the damages? You have from now until the 2nd of July, 2025, to submit a claim via the settlement website. If you are successful in your claim, you can get up to $100. This is based on the settlement terms where Apple agreed to pay $20 per Siri device. In other words, depending on how many devices you own and how many are eligible for the claims, you could get as little as $20 or more, with up to a maximum of five devices.
