Meta blocks Apple Intelligence from accessing its apps

Summary: A recent report reveals that Meta blocks Apple Intelligence features, such as Writing Tools, from its apps. This could be because Meta wants you to use its own Meta AI instead.
In its current state, Apple Intelligence is absolutely underwhelming. So if you don’t use it, we don’t blame you. However, if you do, you might want to take note of this. It turns out that Meta is blocking Apple Intelligence from accessing its apps. This includes Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads.
No Apple Intelligence for Meta apps
For those unfamiliar with Apple Intelligence integration into iOS, users have access to features like Writing Tools. This technically works across all apps to assist users when typing. The tools allow you to create, change, and proofread text using Apple Intelligence. It is designed to save you having to copy and paste the text into a separate AI app, like ChatGPT, for example.
However, the Brazilian blog Sorcererhat Tech shared a screenshot showing that the Writing Tools feature is no longer available in Meta’s apps. If it were just a single app, it could easily be attributed to a bug. But given that it’s across all of Meta’s apps, it looks like it’s intentional. Meta didn’t provide a reason why it removed access to Apple Intelligence, but 9to5Mac speculates that the answer is very simple: Zuckerberg’s company wants you to use Meta AI instead.
This isn’t a good look for Meta. The company is currently facing an antitrust lawsuit in which the FTC accuses it of buying its competitors instead of trying to be competitive by its own means. Blocking iOS users from using Apple Intelligence to try to force Meta AI down their throats would play right into the FTC’s narrative.
Apple and Meta’s AI relationship
Many companies are developing their own AI models these days, including Meta. In fact, last year, Apple and Meta were apparently in talks to bring Llama to Apple Intelligence. However, Apple didn’t agree with Meta’s privacy policies, which is why it scrapped the deal.
That being said, while Apple Intelligence is a joke compared to other AI tools, its native integration into iOS makes it a more efficient and convenient choice for Apple device users. Sure, it might not be as powerful compared to Google’s Gemini or OpenAI’s ChatGPT. But simple features like rewriting a sentence to sound more friendly or professional can be useful when firing off emails or when trying to craft a post for social media. This means that if you really want to use Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools for Meta’s apps, you’ll have to write it elsewhere and then paste it in. However, at the level of inconvenience, you might be better off using another AI model.
