Google is working on some changes and refinements for Android 16 to improve the UI and user experience. Recent findings point to a new version of Material Design that aims to be more “expressive.” Now, a report reveals that the company is experimenting with a new design for the lock screen of Pixel devices that impacts the “At a Glance” widget in Android 16.

Google’s At a Glance widget is not a feature exclusive to Pixel phones. It is available on all modern Android devices on the market. However, Google reserves some exclusive features for its products. Basically, the integration is “deeper” on Pixel phones and tablets, enabling additional options for the lock screen. The new design in development, spotted by Android Authority, seems to aim for a cleaner lock screen look.

The widget has three key features on the lock screen of Pixel devices. It can display the current date, weather, and some data bits/shortcuts via a horizontal carousel. The widget serves its purpose very well, allowing you to get useful snippets of information at a glance.

The current design places both the date and weather below the widget. The data bits from the OS or apps are placed below them, and you can swipe left or right to view them all.

However, the new lock screen design for Pixel devices on Android 16 moves the date and weather data to the right of the At a Glance widget. The font has undergone refinement and minimalism, and the weather icons are now white instead of colored. Meanwhile, the carousel of data bits and shortcuts are still available just below “At a Glance.” Below them, you’ll find your traditional notifications, as always.

The new design is available in the Android 16 beta 4 update, but it doesn’t come enabled by default. However, in its current state, it’s fully functional. The new design achieves a more minimalist, clean, and pleasing look. Google may implement it in the first stable rollout of Android 16.
