Cyber Security Company CEO Arrested for Installing Malware Onto Hospital Computers

Jeffrey Bowie, CEO of cybersecurity firm Veritaco, was arrested on April 14, 2025, facing two counts of violating Oklahoma’s Computer Crimes Act for allegedly installing malware on computers at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City.

The incident, which occurred on August 6, 2024, has raised serious concerns about insider threats in healthcare cybersecurity.

According to court documents, security cameras captured Bowie wandering through the hospital, attempting to access multiple offices before finding two computers where he allegedly installed malicious software. The malware was designed to take screenshots every 20 minutes and transmit them to an external IP address.

When confronted by hospital staff, Bowie reportedly claimed he had a family member undergoing surgery and needed to use the computer. However, the hospital’s subsequent forensic analysis uncovered the malware installation.

“On August 6, 2024, an unauthorized individual was identified accessing a hospital computer in an alleged attempt to install malware,” stated SSM Health in an official release. “The protection of data and the integrity of our systems are top priorities. Due to precautions in place, the issue was addressed immediately, and no patient information was accessed. We worked closely with law enforcement during the investigation”.

The Oklahoma City Police Department reported that Bowie was seen by a hospital employee using a computer designated for employees only. Following this observation, St. Anthony conducted a forensic review that confirmed malware had been installed.

Bowie’s LinkedIn profile describes Veritaco as a “cybersecurity, digital forensics, and private intelligence firm focused on delivering top-class services” with two to ten employees.

Prior to founding Veritaco in August 2023, Bowie worked as a Senior Cyber Security Engineer at High Point Networks and held various security-related positions at other companies.

St. Anthony Hospital, a 773-bed general facility in the Midtown district of Oklahoma City, offers numerous medical services, including cardiology, oncology, neurology, and kidney transplantation. It is also home to the Saint’s Heart and Vascular Institute.

If convicted of violating the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act, Bowie could face significant penalties. Under Oklahoma law, felony violations can result in fines between $5,000 and $100,000, imprisonment for up to ten years, or both.

The investigation is ongoing, with both the FBI and local law enforcement involved in the case.
