Lorex 2K Lightbulb Security Camera, A Versatile Solution That Installs in Minutes

Smart bulbs have been around for a while, but the Lorex’s 2K WiFi Lightbulb Security Camera might be the most versatile model I have ever tried. Hidden within a LED lightbulb that illuminates the surroundings of my place, the security camera comes with a 360 motorized pan-tilt function and lets me scan every corner without blind spots.

Full 360° Coverage That Installs in Minutes

One of the best parts about it is that the lightbulb design allows for easy installation. It can be easily screwed into either standard E26 or E27 light sockets without any toolkits. For those of us who live in a rental, removing the need for drilling or wiring can be especially appealing. I just replaced the old porch light, have the lightbulb connected with Wi-Fi, and already have a functional security camera within 5 minutes. 

Illuminate with 4 Light Modes

The lightbulb’s illumination is surprisingly bright but welcoming. With a built-in 400-lumen dimmable LED light, the light intensity, activation, and schedule can be customized from the Lorex app, either manually or with the other light modes.

My favorite is the Motion-Activated Mode. Powered by in-camera edge AI, the security camera is  able to detect people and vehicles in view. When motion-activated mode is on, it works in tandem with the lightbulb,b and it will be activated when someone is coming home. I could adjust everything from brightness to the duration of how long it remains on. 

I also found the Vacation Mode particularly useful when I was away for the Easter holiday. I set it to automatically turn on and off during the weekend when no one was home and used it as a subtle deterrent. 

The Smart Scheduling is similar to Google Calendar in some way, with it you can repeat the setup and have the light switched on every Monday, Tuesday at sunset or sunrise. 

Exceptional Clarity Day and Light Through Snow and Storm

For the camera portion, the 2K resolution also ensures that image quality isn’t lost even when a wider area is covered. With 2K resolution, I could easily zoom in on the Lorex app and still view video footage in exceptional clarity. As outdoor lighting can be a bit more unpredictable, this lightbulb camera also features Color Night Vision for better low-light performance, letting you monitor your property day and night.

Although the lightbulb portion does not have an IP65 weather-resistant rating, as long as there is a protective shelter, the lightbulb camera can be used outdoors as it has an IP65 housing, protecting it against harsh weather conditions like snow, rai,n and extreme heat.

Privacy Control On Your Own Terms

What really makes the product privacy-centric is the on-demand privacy mode. Whenever I want to enjoy some downtime without having the camera monitor me, I just use the app to rotate the camera inwards, and it stops recording. It’s a small detail but it makes a big difference when you can unplug without unplugging.

As mentioned, the camera is designed with a built-in-edge AI, meaning all the AI detection is processed locally, anyone who is concerned with data privacy, and rightly so, can have peace of mind that their data remains secure.

I also appreciate that the brand doesn’t mandatorily lock you into a recurring subscription for storage, as it works with an SD card.
