Google’s Search business has been in the regulator’s crosshairs for a while now. More recently, the FTC also joined hands with the DOJ, agreeing to its plans to end Google’s Search monopoly. Well, Google isn’t just dealing with that; rivals like ChatGPT and others are also harming its Search business significantly. While Google Search has bundled features like AI Overviews for quite some time now, the company is now testing the Discussions feature within Search itself.

Google has launched a Reddit-style Discussions feature within Search in beta on mobile

Google has reportedly launched the Discussions feature in beta on the mobile version of Search. According to X user Nicholas McDonough, the new Discussions feature in Google Search appears when users in the US search for a “team vs team” query.

As seen in the screenshot shared on his post, Google now offers a Discussions tab where users can leave comments. This feature appears alongside sports-related information, such as scores, upcoming matches, and more.

For those wondering, users can drop comments using their Google account. Their name and profile picture are also shared alongside the comment they leave in the discussion thread within the Google Search. What’s interesting is that other users can upvote, downvote, and even reply to those comments, just like on Reddit.

Users will also be able to filter Top comments or choose to see all comments from the discussion thread. Once you click on a user, you’ll land on the user’s Discussions profile, where you can see all their posts.

The feature has all the chances of becoming popular

As mentioned earlier, the Discussions tab within Google Search is available in beta via the mobile app. So, it’s safe to say that Google is still working on it. For now, the purpose of the Discussions feature is unclear. However, bundling it with sports-related content is a wise idea, given the social nature of the activity. Moreover, we can’t deny the possibility of the feature becoming popular among sports fans.
