Apple has a bad habit of ignoring the cameras used for selfies and webcams. Look at how long it took it to upgrade the webcams in its Mac computers. However, come the iPhone 17 series, Apple will finally give its iPhone selfie cameras an upgrade. According to analyst Jeff Pu, he claims that Apple will upgrade the selfie cams across the iPhone 17 series lineup to a 24MP sensor.
A selfie upgrade
Right now, Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup features a 12MP front-facing camera. This is more or less the same camera that the company has used in the past several generations. Apple has tweaked the front-facing camera a bit with slightly larger apertures, but otherwise, in terms of megapixel count, it’s been 12MP for a few years now.
However, according to Pu, Apple will bump the selfie cams on the iPhone 17 models where they’ll all get an upgrade to 24MP. This is in line with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who had previously suggested that there would be at least one iPhone 17 model with a 24MP selfie cam.
That being said, megapixels only tell one part of the story. There are other factors that affect the overall image quality. This includes the lens aperture, the sensor size, and software. However, at least on paper and for advertising purposes, 24MP does look better and more “modern” compared to 12MP.
iPhone 17 launch in September
In addition to the upgraded selfie cam, Pu’s report claims that the iPhone 17 lineup will feature increased RAM. It will go from 8GB in the iPhone 16 series to 12GB in the iPhone 17 series. We’ve heard these rumors before. It is speculated that this could be due to AI, where future Apple Intelligence features could require more RAM to run.
Apple will launch the iPhone 17 series later this year. The event will most likely take place in September. The company will launch the base iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple will also introduce a brand new model—the iPhone 17 Air. This will take the place of the iPhone 17 Plus.
The iPhone 17 Air will sport a new and slimmer design. It is speculated that this is Apple’s experimental iPhone to see if it can make it as powerful as a regular iPhone but in a slimmer package. If successful, we could see Apple apply those design principles to future iPhone models as well.
