Does the Google Pixel 9a have a microSD card slot?

If you’re thinking about buying Google’s Pixel 9a you’ll have two storage size options to go with, 128GB and 256GB, but you might also be wondering whether or not the phone has a microSD card slot.

The answer to that question is no. Google did not include a microSD slot with this device. That means you’re stuck with either the 128GB or the 256GB for storage caps. However, there are more ways to store your media and other files than just with the phone’s internal storage. A microSD card slot is always nice to have, but it’s not absolutely necessary. That’s especially true these days, given that there are so many options for portable storage.

That being said if you’re planning to buy Google’s latest phone when it launches, use the knowledge that the phone has no microSD card slot to help you decide how much storage you want on the phone. In most people’s cases, the 128GB is probably enough. If you’re a power user and you like to download and store a lot on your phone, then you might want to spring for the 256GB model.

Why you don’t need a microSD card slot on the Google Pixel 9a

There are several reasons why you don’t need expandable storage via a microSD card, especially on a Pixel phone. For starters, as mentioned above most people should be able to get along great with just the 128GB of internal storage. Even if you take a lot of photos, it will take a while to fill all that up.

It’s also worth noting that Pixel smartphones will come with some additional storage in Google One. With that, you can backup some or all of your photos in the Google Photos app, and choose to have some or none stored on the phone’s internal storage at all. This is actually a really smart way to store the bulk of your photos. While larger files like videos and such could be kept on the phone’s internal storage.

In addition to the cloud storage of Google One, you could opt for a portable SSD of some kind to store anything extra if you run out of space. Something like this little mobile SSD for example. You can plug into the phone’s USB-C port.

What are my other options?

As noted, you could always opt for a portable SSD. An external SSD for example makes for great extra storage for things you don’t always need quick access to. You can plug these right into the phone using a USB-C cable and get to stuff when you need it. Then unplug it and store the SSD away when you’re done. This can be great for large document files and photos and videos you won’t be accessing often.

There are other cloud storage options as well, such as apps like OneDrive, Dropbox, and several others. Most or all of these have apps you can download to the phone itself. So there you have it. Google’s new phone doesn’t come with a microSD card slot, but you don’t really need one.
