Contrary to widespread predictions of their demise, passwords remain deeply entrenched in digital security infrastructure.

However, security experts increasingly view passwords as backup authentication methods rather than primary barriers, recognizing their universal compatibility when biometric scanners fail or security tokens are lost.

“Even when passwords are ‘replaced’, they’re still often used as a fallback,” according to industry analysis, suggesting organizations should strengthen password security while integrating new authentication technologies rather than planning for complete passwordless environments.

Dashlane’s first Passkey Report documented remarkable adoption metrics, with over 100 domains now offering passkey support, including significant platforms like Target, PlayStation, and X. 

E-commerce sites account for 42% of passkey authentications, driven by the convenience factor that reduces cart abandonment—a critical issue given that the average US consumer abandons purchases 4.76 times daily due to forgotten passwords.

Major Tech Giants Drive Industry Transformation

Technology leaders are accelerating passwordless adoption through coordinated infrastructure support. Apple, Google, and Microsoft have committed to implementing FIDO Sign-in standards across their platforms, creating a unified passwordless ecosystem.

 Microsoft reports a 987% increase in passkey usage alongside a 10% reduction in password-based logins, demonstrating significant user migration toward passwordless methods.

Google’s announcement of passkey support represents a milestone in this transformation. It enables users to authenticate by simply unlocking their phones rather than entering passwords.

The passkey system utilizes FIDO credentials based on public key cryptography, offering enhanced security while maintaining a seamless user experience.

FIDO2 Standard Achieves Critical Mass

The Fast Identity Online (FIDO2) standard has reached a pivotal adoption threshold, with approximately 95% of global user devices now supporting WebAuthn authentication protocols.
