Summary: Google is rolling out a new server-side update to Gmail for Android that makes managing email subscriptions easier. However, this rollout isn’t available for Gmail on the web or the iOS app, so it isn’t clear how widespread it is.
There’s a good chance that over the years, you’ve subscribed to a number of mailing lists. Some are still relevant, the others, not so much. The good news is that it looks like Google is introducing an easier way for you to manage your Gmail subscriptions in the Android app.
Managing Gmail subscriptions
According to a report from 9to5Google, Google has pushed out a server-side update for the Gmail app on Android. In this update, the app now has a new section called “Manage subscriptions.” When users tap on it, the app displays all the mailing lists from which they’ve received emails.
From there, users have the option of selecting all these mailing lists and then selecting “unsubscribe.” You can do this in one fell swoop, instead of scrolling through each email hunting for that tiny “unsubscribe” button. That said, the unsubscription doesn’t always happen instantly.
According to Google, it “can take senders a few days to stop sending messages” after you click unsubscribe. However, if those emails still keep coming in, then we guess it’s time to mark those as spam, which is probably the most effective way of keeping them out of your inbox.
This “manage subscriptions” page isn’t new per se. It was actually spotted a little over a year ago. Why it took Google this long to introduce it to Gmail is unclear, but you know what they say: better late than never. Also, another thing to note is that right now, the feature is only available on the Android app.
It isn’t available on the web, nor is it available on the iOS app. We also don’t know how wide this update is rolling out. It could be staggered, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see it yet. Also, since this is a server-side update, just make sure you’re running the latest version of Gmail.
