Summary: Google will have to face Yelp’s antitrust accusations, as the court has rejected Google’s move to dismiss the case entirely. This is yet another huge battle that Google is facing, in addition to Search and ad monopoly cases.
Yelp’s court case against Google will move forward, it seems. The Northern District Court of California has allowed Yelp’s core claims to move forward in Yelp vs Google case.
Yelp’s antitrust court case against Google is moving forward
Yelp’s spokesperson reached out to share the news, as Judge Van Keulen rejected Google’s attempt to dismiss the case. The Judge recognized that Yelp had plausibly alleged Google’s “monopoly power and exclusionary conduct within the statute of limitations period”, said the spokesperson.
Furthermore, Yelp’s General Counsel, Aaron Schur, said the following: “Today’s ruling marks an important step forward in Yelp’s case against Google. As we argued in our opposition to Google’s motion, and as the Court recognized, Google’s anticompetitive behavior deserves to be examined. We look forward to presenting our case and detailing the harmful consequences of Google’s abuse of its dominance in the local search and local search advertising markets at the expense of what’s best for consumers, innovation, and fair competition.”
This lawsuit was kicked off last year
If Yelp vs Google case sounds familiar, that’s probably because you’ve heard of it last year. Back in August last year, Yelp has decided to sue Google for monopolistic behavior.
Back then, Yelp’s CEO said that “Google abuses its monopoly power in general search to keep users within Google’s own ecosystem and prevents them from going to rival sites”, amongst other things.
We knew it will take some time before we get more information about the case, and it just happened. It seems like this case will go to court, as did several others regarding Google lately.
As a reminder, Google is in the middle of a three-week remedies trial regarding its Search monopoly. The company already lost the case, and we’re waiting to see what will be the aftermath. Google also lost an ad monopoly case to DOJ recently.
