Kali Linux 2025.1a Released With New Tool & Updates to Desktop Environments

Kali Linux, the widely acclaimed cybersecurity-focused distribution, has officially unveiled its latest release, Kali Linux 2025.1a.

This update not only significantly enhances desktop environments but also introduces exciting new tools and improvements tailored for cybersecurity professionals and enthusiasts.

The release, available for download or upgrade, builds upon existing features to provide a more streamlined user experience. The “a” in 2025.1a indicates a swift rebuild to address a last-minute bug discovered in a package after the initial images were produced.

Continuing the tradition of annual theme updates with the year’s first release, Kali Linux 2025.1a boasts a modern interface with enhancements to the boot menu, login screen, and desktop wallpapers for both Kali and Kali Purple editions.

Community contributions have also been included in the kali-community-wallpapers package, offering a variety of backgrounds.

Desktop Environment Updates

Kali Linux 2025.1a includes significant upgrades to its desktop environments:

  • KDE Plasma 6.2 After a long wait, Plasma 6 is now available in Kali, specifically version 6.21. This is a major update, as the previous version included in Kali was Plasma 5.27, making the scope of changes difficult to summarize1. All themes have been updated to align with the new environment, featuring refreshed windows and desktop visuals.
  • Xfce 4.20 The default desktop environment, Xfce, has been updated from version 4.18 to 4.20, incorporating two years of development. New keyboard shortcuts have been added to enhance the user experience, including shortcuts for the file manager (Ctrl + Alt + F, Super + E, Super + F), running commands (Super + R), opening the terminal (Super + T), opening the browser (Super + W), finding the cursor (Super + F1), and showing the desktop (Super + D)1. Window manager shortcuts have also been added for moving windows between monitors and tiling windows.

Raspberry Pi Enhancements

The 2025.1a release brings several changes to Raspberry Pi images:

  • A newer raspi-firmware package is now used, mirroring the Raspberry Pi OS.
  • A new kernel based on version 6.6.74 from the Raspberry Pi OS kernel is included in all images, with support for the Raspberry Pi 5.
  • The Nexmon kernel module is now DKMS-enabled as brcmfmac-nexmon-dkms, allowing updates separate from the kernel, though the firmware is not included in this release.
  • A new partition layout mirrors Raspberry Pi OS images, with the first (vfat) partition mounted at /boot/firmware instead of /boot.
  • The config.txt file has been simplified, as the newer boot firmware handles many tasks automatically. Due to the extensive changes, it is recommended to start with a fresh image rather than upgrading from a previous version.

Kali NetHunter Updates

This release includes updates to Kali NetHunter, such as the addition of a “CAN Arsenal” tab to the NetHunter app for car hacking and new kernels for Samsung phones with a successfully ported Samsung HID patch.

The installer now features a dynamic wallpaper, and various bug fixes have been implemented.

New Tools

Kali Linux 2025.1a introduces a new tool to its network repositories:

  • hoaxshell: A Windows reverse shell payload generator and handler that abuses the HTTP(S) protocol to establish a beacon-like reverse shell.

Other updates in Kali Linux 2025.1a include splitting the live-config build-script into kali-installer and kali-live. There have also been updates to the Kali website, including new pages for official, legacy, and community wallpapers, as well as updates to Kali documentation.

The Kali Linux team has acknowledged the contributions of various community members for their help with documentation, forum support, community wallpapers, and packaging. New mirrors have been added in multiple countries, expanding the distribution network.

Getting Kali Linux 2025.1a

Users can download fresh images or upgrade their existing Kali Linux installations. Weekly builds are also available for those who want the latest packages and bug fixes but do not require the QA of standard release images.

sudo apt update && sudo apt -y full-upgrade

With these comprehensive updates in tools, desktop environments, mobile capabilities, and community-driven enhancements, Kali Linux 2025.1a continues its legacy as an indispensable resource for cybersecurity professionals globally.
