Sony announces Project Defiant, a wireless fight stick for PS5 and PC

Sony has announced a fight stick called Project Defiant. And it works wirelessly on PS5.

Arcade fighting sticks aren't a new thing, they have existed for decades. Gamers were surprised about the sudden announcement of the device, which happened during State of Play. The controller's real name is yet to be revealed.

You can watch a teaser video of the Project Defiant stick on YouTube. Sony says that Project Defiant was customized designed for fighting games, and that it offers ultra-low latency wireless connectivity, to nail the input timing of players. This seems like it would be a perfect controller for games like Mortal Kombat where precision counts. The device requires a PS Link USB adapter to function. As for the design, it has a large analog stick on the left, a large touchpad like the one on the DualSense controller, the L3, R3 buttons are at the top, while the other controller buttons are on the right including R1, R2, L1, L2, and the usual PlayStation buttons. The buttons have mechanical switches. Want to wake up your PS5 with it ? You can do so by pressing and holding the PS button at the top of the device.

The restrictor gates for the stick are interchangeable and don't require the use of a tool, it has three restrictor gates (square, circle, and octagon), so you can control the joystick's range of motion per your needs. And, you can store the gates and the PS Link adapter right inside the storage compartment of the fight stick. Interestingly, Sony's fight stick is not exclusive to its PlayStation 5 console, it is also compatible with PC, though it doesn't work wirelessly on the latter, you will need to connect it via a wired USB-C connection.

Sony will share more details about Project Defiant in the coming months, it will be launched in 2026. It has already confirmed that the fight stick will come with a carrying case that has a lever gap to protect the stick.
