Google is making a big bet on the future of its Search service, and it looks like artificial intelligence is going to play a starring role. The company has been hard at work developing its AI Mode for Search, aiming to seamlessly blend the power of AI with the familiar way we look for information online. Now, we’re getting a sneak peek at what could be Google Search’s AI Live Mode, major upgrade coming down the pipeline.
If you’ve been following Google’s AI advancements, you might be familiar with Gemini Live. It’s one of the coolest features they’ve added to their AI-powered assistant for mobile devices, allowing for natural, flowing conversations just like you’d have with another person. Well, it seems Google is now exploring ways to bring that same conversational magic to its Search AI Mode.
Google Search’s upcoming AI Mode leaked
The folks over at Android Authority recently spotted this new feature hiding within the latest Google app beta build (version 16.17.38.sa.arm64). While this version isn’t publicly available just yet, they managed to get an early look under the hood. It’s important to note that this feature isn’t fully integrated, and there’s still clearly some development work ahead. However, the UI elements and descriptions are present.
Live for Google’s AI Mode uses the exact same logo as in Gemini. This opens the door for “Live” to be a brand and not an intrinsic part of Gemini, as we thought. From now on, “Live” could be synonymous with advanced conversational experiences across any Google service.
Just like in Gemini, the Live button is positioned right next to the input bar in Search’s interface. Once you tap on it and agree to the necessary permissions and terms of service, you’ll be able to start conducting searches using natural language. Think of it as a supercharged version of Google’s already existing AI Overviews.
An experimental feature
Part of the description for this feature reads, “Live for AI Mode is experimental and can make mistakes.” This clearly indicates that what we’re seeing is a relatively early stage of development. It’s quite possible that this disclaimer will even be present when the feature makes its first official public appearance. It sounds like we might encounter some issues that you wouldn’t typically find in Gemini Live. On a brighter note, just like with Gemini, it seems you’ll also have various voice tones to choose from for the AI’s responses.
For now, the big question is when Google plans to roll out this “Live” feature for Search’s AI Mode to the wider public. There’s a good chance we might hear more details at the upcoming Google I/O event in May. It definitely looks like Google is serious about making our interactions with Search more natural and conversational.
