Google continues to work to make its Wallet service the primary hub for all your cards and digital ID documents. In recent weeks, the app has received some functionality improvements, such as sending you status updates for your trains and allowing you to use nicknames for your passes, among others. Soon, Google Wallet may also get a contactless way to add your credit and debit cards via NFC.

Android Authority found some key strings that point to the implementation of the new feature. The lines of code include some descriptions and are present in the latest beta version of Google Play Services (v25.16.33). Currently, there doesn’t appear to be a working implementation of the feature. However, the strings offer some details about how it might work once available.

Google working on an NFC-based contactless way to add cards to Wallet

According to the report, Google is working on a contactless way to add credit and debit cards to Wallet. The new card registration feature is based on NFC, just like payments. It would be available alongside the current camera-based card scanning option. Currently, you can use your phone’s camera to have Wallet read the card details from a photo. You can also add the details manually if you prefer, of course. The new feature would be another option available alongside the existing ones on the “Add payment method” screen.

You may still need to manually add some information—such as the CVV code—for security reasons. However, the NFC scanning would allow Google Wallet to automatically get data such as the card number and expiration date. Card issuers may also require some additional verification steps.

Sadly, since there isn’t a functional implementation yet, there are no further clues about how the feature will work. However, the integration of its description into the code suggests that Google could ship the feature in the coming weeks.
