Summary: Netflix is getting a new game called Spirit Crossing which will be the service’s first MMO. It offers a ton of features that players can engage with either by themselves or with friends. The game will also allow players to foster communities and make new friends to enjoy the game world with.
Netflix is getting a new game called Spirit Crossing, and the game’s development studio is hailing it as a cozy MMO village life sim game. Spirit Crossing is developed by Spry Fox, the same studio that made Cozy Grove, which launched on Netflix last year. The game has actually been out since 2021, however, launching first on Apple Arcade and then making the jump to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC later that same year.
Netflix then acquired Spry Fox in late 2022 as part of its efforts to bolster its gaming strategy. Since launching Netflix Games, the company has released over 100 titles you can play. Some of these are also now available to play on the Netflix website via desktop as part of a beta. However, Spirit Crossing is a bit different than any of those other games. Because, as The Verge points out, this is the first MMO available on Netflix.
Spirit Crossing will be the first MMO for Netflix Games
Many of the games available on Netflix are quite enjoyable and you could spend hours playing them. That being said, these are all mostly single-player experiences. Spirit Crossing will be the first MMO on the platform and MMOs are a different beast altogether. Not only are MMOs live service, which means constant upkeep, but they tend to present the unique challenge of keeping players engaged with lots of stuff to do. More than a single-player game might.
Precisely because the game is meant to be played for a long time. That being said, games in the cozy genre are pretty popular and Cozy Grove in general is at a Very Positive rating on Steam. So it’s likely that Spirit Crossing will have success. At the very least it’s bound to drum up excitement from fans of the studio’s previous game.
In terms of content, Netflix says players will be able to build and decorate their homes and villages, make friends, and gather resources together. All typical features that many of today’s MMOs offer. Players will also be able to “join a dance party and jam sessions” and “follow friends on fluffaloback,” which appears to be some sort of flying mount you can find in the game. Netflix also released an announcement trailer for Spirit Crossing which you can view below.
The game launches later this year
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet but it does confirm that Spirit Crossing is launching sometime later this year. The game will also be getting a closed alpha test. You can sign up to participate in that at the game’s official website. Spirit Crossing appears to be limited to iOS and Android devices.
