If you are a true Apple fan, you must be aware that the company doesn’t only deal in gadgets but has all sorts of streaming services under its belt. Apple TV+ is one of them. However, it seems, the service service isn’t quite profitable for the Cupertino giant. A paywalled report by The Information suggests that Apple TV+ is losing an astounding amount of money.
Apple TV+ is reportedly losing a staggering amount of $1 billion annually
Thankfully for the company, Apple TV+ is the only subscription service that is losing money. Although the number of subscribers surpassed 45 million last year, the service is reportedly losing $1 billion per year. The company has spent over $5 billion a year only on content since it introduced Apple TV+ back in 2019. However, after an intervention by the CEO, the spending dropped by $500 million in the last year.
The report mentions that Tim Cook questioned Apple TV+ executives about several movie deals last year. This includes the spy action-comedy movie “Argylle.” Cook was reportedly concerned about the underwhelming response from the audience and hadn’t generated more subscribers for Apple TV+.
The report further reveals that the audience for Apple TV+ only makes up less than 1% of total U.S. streaming service viewing. That could be the reason why Apple TV+ offered free access for the first weekend of 2025. Do note that losses in the streaming industry aren’t a new thing. However, Apple losing such a staggering amount of money being the biggest tech company makes things look worse from the outside.
The Senior VP of Services reportedly shielded the executives
While Apple TV+ executives were under the firing line of Cook, Senior VP of Services, Eddy Cue reportedly shielded them from budget scrutiny. He reportedly also rejected the proposal to increase oversight of programming costs. Not to forget, Apple’s overall profits are huge, which can cover these losses. However, it is internally taking measures to avoid such losses. In its effort to attract viewership, the company recently also launched an Android app for Apple TV.
