Sega Publishes Canon Sonic the Hedgehog Timeline
The Sonic the Hedgehog website now includes a canon timeline of the events and games from the series. It starts from prehistory (Sonic World Adventure) and ends 200 years in the future (Sonic the Hedgehog). The full timeline is available directly via Sega. You can read through important events that occurred throughout the franchise’s history, as well as which games the events were from. This can give Sonic fans, both new and old, an easy way to look at the games’ story and in-lore history without necessarily having to sit through a video essay or picking up the entire series themself. Aside from giving an overview of the timeline, we can also see which Sonic properties Sega considers as part of the canon. Party game Sonic Shuffle is canon, and it took place between Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. So after Sonic and friends saved Maginaryworld, they had to save the world again from Doctor Eggman’s nefarious plot. Games like Sonic Mania, which Sega published but is not a team from Sonic Team, also appear on the timeline, marking it as a canon entry in the general story. You can check out the Sonic the Hedgehog timeline yourself via Sega’s website. The most recent game in the series is Sonic x Shadow Generations for the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
