Valve has released SteamOS 3.7.8 update, which includes several improvements aimed at enhancing user experience for and device compatibility. The company had recently announced SteamOS Compatibility Ratings, which is now available for the Lenovo Legion GO S.
SteamOS has been updated to a newer Arch Linux base along with the 6.11 Linux kernel, new Mesa graphics drivers, and a new version of Plasma. The update improves support for various AMD powered handhelds. Among those benefiting from the update are the ASUS ROG Ally and the original Lenovo Legion Go. Users can now flash an official image of SteamOS on these handhelds. Instructions for installing SteamOS on third-party devices can be found here.
The Lenovo Legion Go S, touted as a potential competitor to the Steam Deck, fully supports SteamOS, and this could resolve performance issues that were reported by testers who used the Windows version.
Valve has improved controller support for SteamOS to add support for the Proteus Byowave modular controller, bug fixes for controllers such as the Switch Pro Controller. The update also patches some Bluetooth issues that users had reported, along with some new features, such as the ability to view the battery level of connected devices.
PC Gamer notes that one of the key features of the SteamOS 3.7.8 update is the introduction of an 80% battery limit, a measure designed to prolong battery life for devices, especially when they are left docked or charged for extended periods.
SteamOS is expected to be available for more devices officially. It could prove to be a solid challenger for Windows as a gaming platform, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
