Summary: Trump’s new Tariffs are forcing Nintendo to assess how they will affect the company as well as its new console. The company is opting to delay preorders in the US, however, it still plans to launch the Switch 2 on June 5 for $449.

Earlier this week, Nintendo announced the Switch 2, nearly eight years after the original Switch. Preorders were set to open on April 9, with the launch date happening on June 5, 2025. However, Nintendo has now announced that preorders will not open on April 9, in the US. The release date has no changed, though. So far this delay appears to be only for the US.

Nintendo is citing Trump’s Tariffs as a reason for the delay. The company wants to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions, before putting the device up for preorder. Nintendo says it will update the timing at a later date.

Despite this, Nintendo still plan to launch the Switch 2 for $449 on June 5.

Trump unveiled his Tariffs on the same day Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2

The Switch 2 was unveiled on Wednesday, the same day that the Trump Administration unveiled their set of tariffs for virtually every country on the planet. Trump has put 34% tariffs on China, which China has already retailated with adding 34% to the already 20% it charges the US.

The Switch was manufactured primarily in China, with some manufacturing happening in Vietnam and Cambodia. Many of the components also come from Southeast Asia, countries that are getting hit the hardest by these tariffs. So Nintendo definitely does need to assess how these tariffs will affect it and the Switch 2 launch.

Though it is pretty good news that Nintendo does still intend to launch the Switch 2 for $449. The original Switch launched in 2017 for $299, accounting for inflation, that’s roughly $387 today. Given the fact that most of these components are now more expensive as well, the $449 price tag is actually quite good.

We should learn more about Nintendo’s plans for the Switch 2, when it comes to the US, in the coming weeks.
