Summary: Ahead of the Google Pixel 9a’s launch date of April 10th, a teardown video has surfaced online, revealing the device’s internal design. The video shows the arrangement of all the internal components of the new affordable Pixel.
Google introduced the Pixel 9a on March 19th as its latest mid-range offering. However, it’s been more than two weeks since the launch, but the phone hasn’t hit the market shelves yet. The company had to delay the Pixel 9a’s launch due to a “component quality issue that’s affecting a small number of Pixel 9a devices.” Last week, Google finally announced that the Pixel 9a will be available to buy in the US from April 10th. In the meantime, a teardown video of the Pixel 9a has surfaced, which gives us a look at the internals of the latest affordable Pixel offering.
Pixel 9a’s teardown video gives us a look at the internal design
The folks behind the YouTube channel PBKreviews have managed to get their hands on a Pixel 9a unit before it goes on sale in major markets like the US. It posted a teardown or disassembly video of the device, apart from giving it a decent repairability score.
Google’s Pixel 9a’s first teardown video starts with the removal of the SIM card tray. Google has included a black rubber gasket around the SIM tray to provide enhanced protection against water. The device has the IP68 certification to provide an improved resistance against water and dust as compared to the IP67-certified Pixel 8a. Its plastic backplate is easily removable by applying a little heat. Google has placed NFC and the wireless charging coil on the plastic motherboard cover.
Google provided a pull tab to remove the battery. However, it easily breaks off while trying to remove the power cell, as it has a strong layer of adhesive underneath. The YouTuber was able to remove the battery after applying some isopropyl alcohol on the sides. So, removing the battery of the Pixel 9a could be a challenging task for some during DIY repairs.
Pixel 9a’s screen is easy to replace
Furthermore, the disassembly video reveals that the flex cable of the Pixel 9a’s screen connects underneath the motherboard. The design makes it easy to replace a broken screen as you can pry it off from the front without having to disassemble the entire device.
The video also reveals that Google placed the primary microphone next to the charging port. It soldered the charging port and SIM card reader to the motherboard, which will make the repairs more difficult.
That said, the PBK Reviews has given the Pixel 9a a repairability score of 7.5 points out of 10. It’s relatively easier to replace the screen and battery, as compared to the small parts like the charging port and the SIM card reader. We are also waiting for iFixit to post a disassembly video of the new affordable Pixel phone, so watch this space for regular updates.
