Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Design

When you check out their designs, you’ll see quite a few similarities. Let’s actually start from the back this time around. Both smartphones have five circular protrusions on the back, basically in the same spot. They’re located in the top-left corner, and each of them protrudes directly from the phone’s back side. There is no dedicated camera island. The ones on the Galaxy S25 Ultra are bigger in size, though.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra has a completely flat front and back side, while that is not the case with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. That phone has a curved front and back side, towards the sides. The newer phone has a flat display, while the older one has a curved one. Both include a centered display camera hole up top. The frame on the Galaxy S25 Ultra is flat all around, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a flat frame only at the top and bottom.

The power/lock button and volume up and down buttons are located in the same spot on both phones, on the right-hand side. There is an S Pen stylus included on both phones, and on both of them, it’s tucked away in the bottom-left corner. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is made out of titanium and glass, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra uses aluminum and glass. The newer phone is slightly shorter, narrower, and thinner, while it’s also around 10 grams lighter. Both of them are slippery, and both offer an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Display

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra features a 6.8-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X display. It is flat, and the resolution here is 3120 x 1440 pixels. This display offers an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz), while it also supports HDR10+ content. It has a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, and the screen-to-body ratio of around 92%. The display aspect ratio is 19.5:9, and the display is protected by the Gorilla Armor 2.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the flip side, has a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel. That display is curved, and offers a resolution of 3088 x 1440 pixels. It offers a refresh rate of 120Hz and supports HDR10+ content. The peak brightness here is 1,750 nits. You’re also getting a screen-to-body ratio of around 90%, while the display aspect ratio is 19.3:9. This display is protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus+.

Generally speaking, both displays are good. They’re vivid, have great viewing angles and good touch response. The blacks are also as deep as you’d expect on both of them. The newer panel does have some advantages, however. It is brighter in basically all situations, and that’s something you’ll especially notice outdoors. On top of that, thanks to Gorilla Armor 2, it also repels glare with extreme efficiency, it’s a completely different experience compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor. That is an overclocked variant of Qualcomm’s most powerful chip. It’s a 3nm processor and comes combined with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. UFS 4.0 flash storage is also used. The Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the flip side, is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 chip, depending on the market. Both of those are 4nm processors and are coupled with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 flash storage. Neither phone supports storage expansion.

If you compare their performance side-by-side, you will notice that the Galaxy S25 Ultra has the advantage. That is perfectly normal considering how much newer it is, and how much more powerful it is at the same time. It is snappier in pretty much every way, but the Galaxy S22 Ultra still offers good performance. When it comes to day-to-day tasks, that phone can still push through without a problem.

Do note that if you’re going to play more demanding games, the Galaxy S25 Ultra is easily the better choice of the two. It’s not even close. It has a much more powerful processor and GPU, and can play basically any game you’ll find in the Google Play Store. The Galaxy S22 Ultra could struggle with more demanding games, though it’s still a powerful piece of technology.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Battery

These two smartphones have the same battery capacity. Both of them feature a 5,000mAh Li-Ion battery on the inside. Despite the fact they have the same battery capacity, their battery life is not comparable. The Galaxy S25 Ultra has much better battery life, it’s not even close. That phone could last us over a day of more intense use, without a problem. The Galaxy S22 Ultra struggled to go through a day of remotely similar usage back when we used it.

You mileage may vary, of course, but from what we’ve seen the updates didn’t really do a favor to the Galaxy S22 Ultra in terms of battery life. Getting it even to 7 hours of screen-on-time has proven to be quite a challenge for us. The Galaxy S25 Ultra can go above and beyond that, wihout a problem. Once again, you could easily have a different experience, though.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra supports 45W wired, 15W wireless (Qi2 Ready), and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. The same goes for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, actually, except for the fact it supports 15W Qi charging, it has nothing to do with Qi2. They take the same amount of time to charge, basically. It took us about an hour to charge both, via a wired, give or take a few minutes, of course. Do note that a charger does not come with either phone.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Cameras

Both of these phones feature four cameras on the back, but they’re different units. The Galaxy S25 Ultra comes with a 200-megapixel main camera (1/1.3-inch sensor size), a 50-megapixel ultrawide unit (120-degree FoV), a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (1/3.52-inch sensor size, 3x optical zoom), and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (1/2.52-inch sensor size, 5x optical zoom).

The Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the other hand, has a 108-megapixel main camera (1/1.33-inch sensor size), a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (120-degree FoV, 1/2.55-inch sensor size), a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (1/3.52-inch sensor size, 3x optical zoom), and a 10-megapixel periscope telephoto unit (1/3.52-inch sensor size, 10x optical zoom).

In terms of camera performance, the Galaxy S22 Ultra trails behind the Galaxy S25 Ultra in basically every way. That is not surprising, considering a three-year gap. The telephoto camera performance is not that far off, but everything else kind of is. The Galaxy S25 Ultra does a better job both during the day and night, with more detail, better dynamic range, and overall better image balance. Even its high-zoom shots are a lot better, it’s not even close.

Audio

There is no audio jack on either one of these two smartphones. You can hook up your wired headphones here, but only if you use a dongle. If you prefer wireless audio, the two phones offer Bluetooth 5.4 and 5.2, respectively.

They do have stereo speakers, both of them do. Those speakers are notably louder on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, though, and those speakers do sound better to our ears in general, they offer fuller sound. The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s offerings rae not bad, though, not at all.
