Trump Tariffs Cause Nintendo to Delay Switch 2 Pre-orders
As a result of the tariffs inflicted by President Donald Trump on countries worldwide, Nintendo announced a delay to the Switch 2 pre-orders in the United States. The company did not note if this will cause the price to increase for the console in the US. It did state that it won’t affect the release date. While orders aren't open yet, stores like Best Buy already have product pages in the US. [Thanks, CNN!] President Trump noted that new tariffs take effect on April 9, 2025, with the statement on the official White House website noting “individualized reciprocal higher tariff on countries with which the United States has the largest trade deficits.” This would include ones in Asia, such as Japan, China, and Vietnam. Japan's will be 24%. China and Vietnam, where some components are made and the console is manufactured, would be 34% and 46%, respectively. As a reminder, April 9, 2025 is also the date on which Nintendo said the Switch 2 pre-orders would launch in the US before the latest Trump tariffs announcements. There is now no new set date for the those to start calling dibs on the console. At the moment, its current price is $449.99 for the console alone or $499.99 for a bundle that includes Mario Kart World. That option is only available while supplies last until Fall 2025. This announcement does not affect other Switch 2 pre-orders in countries other than the US. While the official date for those is April 8, 2025, some people already reported being able to call dibs on certain stores. The Nintendo Switch 2 will debut on June 5, 2025.
