Have you seen the thousands of posts on X/Twitter with Studio Ghibli-style images? They’re all a product of ChatGPT’s improved image generation capabilities thanks to the GPT-4o AI model. OpenAI had planned a wide rollout among the majority of the service’s users. However, the company has been forced to delay the availability of ChatGPT’s improved AI image generator for free users.

Ghibli-style images dominating the internet thanks to ChatGPT’s improved AI image generator

ChatGPT’s image generation tool has become extremely popular. The platform can not only generate images but also transform existing images into multiple styles. One of the available styles, Studio Ghibli, has become the most popular among all. This is no surprise, since the artistic style of the Japanese animation studio’s films has always been known for its beauty.

So, thousands of users have been transforming not only their own photos into Ghibli-style art but even popular memes, giving them “new life.” If you’re a social media user—especially on X—you’ve probably already seen tons of images with iconic moments and memes transformed into eye-catching art. The feature’s massive popularity translates into more processing power, something that, apparently, not even OpenAI was ready for.

Tool delayed for free users

OpenAI expected its improved AI image generator to be popular. However, it seems that public interest far exceeded the firm’s expectations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced a delay in the rollout of ChatGPT’s new AI image generator to free users. So, if you are keen to join the trend, you’ll have to pay. Currently, only subscribers to the Plus, Pro, or Team tiers can use the advanced image generation tool.

Images in ChatGPT are wayyyy more popular than we expected (and we had pretty high expectations),” Altman said. “Rollout to our free tier is unfortunately going to be delayed for a while,” he added. Sadly, “a while” isn’t a very specific timeframe, so there are no details on when free ChatGPT users will be able to use the tool. Let’s hope news about this emerges soon.
