Nintendo's Live-Action Legend of Zelda movie gets a release date

Summary: Nintendo has officially announced the release date for its live-action Legend of Zelda movie. Nintendo originally announced its plans for the movie back in November of 2023, following the huge success of its Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Nintendo’s live-action Legend of Zelda movie now has a firm release date, but it’s pretty far-flung, which means fans of the franchise are still going to wait a long while before they see the Hero of Time on the silver screen.

Last week, Nintendo held a Nintendo Direct event to announce a group of upcoming games for the original Nintendo Switch family. It also had a couple of small surprises. One of those surprises was the Nintendo Today app. This new app is Nintendo’s way of getting information about its upcoming products to the fans directly. Just like it does with the Nintendo Direct livestreams. The app even lets you customize the theme based on a collection of different Nintendo game franchises.

It’s inside this app that Nintendo shadow-dropped a key piece of information about the live-action Legend of Zelda movie being co-produced by Sony Pictures. Specifically, when you’ll be able to see it in theaters.

The live-action Legend of Zelda movie will hit theaters on March 26, 2027

Yes, the movie is nearly a full two years away. Coming on March 26, 2027, the live-action movie, presumably starring the franchise’s main protagonist Link. Nintendo saw great success with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, so it shouldn’t be surprising if its live-action Zelda flick attains similar success.

That being said, live-action adaptations of video games over the past two decades have been hit or miss. If any game franchise has a chance to reach super stardom as a live-action movie, though, it’s probably one from Nintendo like The Legend of Zelda. The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. Nintendo is without a doubt bringing the same level of commitment it brought to that movie to the production of its Legend of Zelda live-action.

Nintendo hasn’t announced any information about the movie’s cast or story. That being said, The Legend of Zelda is a long-running game series with tons and tons of lore to pull from. So there are a lot of directions for Nintendo to go. Although Nintendo hasn’t shared any information about the movie’s narrative, it has named some of the production team. Nintendo itself is heavily involved in the production. With the Legend of Zelda series creator Shigeru Miyamoto producing alongside Avi Arad.

Arad is a long-time Marvel Studios producer who’s worked on everything from Iron Man to Kraven the Hunter. He’s also involved in the live-action adaptation of the Naruto movie.
