The hype isn't dead: DeepSeek is still topping the charts!

When DeepSeek exploded onto the scene in January, it basically turned the AI industry on its head. The company came out of nowhere with a model that can go up against the best on the market. Well, a lot has happened since that day, but one thing remains constant: DeepSeek is still one of the most popular chatbots on the market.

Soon after this chatbot hit the market, we started seeing some worrying headlines about it. It turned out that DeepSeek is a security and data privacy nightmare. It was the target of several cyber attacks, and it was pretty careless about how it stored the immense amount of data that it collected. There was also the controversy of the company possibly spending much more money to train DeepSeek’s model than it let on. The company said that it spent just $6 million to train it, but it was probably closer to $1 billion.

Regardless, DeepSeek is still one of the most popular AI platforms on the planet

People want to use AI tools, no matter how dangerous they are. While unfortunate, it shows how much of a role this technology plays in our modern society. No matter how much drama is surrounding a tool, people will flock to it.

aitools.xyz just published a report letting us know just how much people are using DeepSeek. Despite being a social pariah in the AI space, DeepSeek is still pulling in some high numbers. Just last month, the platform had a total of 792.6 million visits, which was nearly triple the number of visits it got in January.

While DeepSeek wasn’t around throughout all of January, what’s more significant is the fact that 524.7 million of those visits were from new visitors. That’s more than the 500 million new visitors that ChatGPT got last month. This makes DeepSeek the fastest-growing AI chatbot on the market.

We’re sure that the numbers will fluctuate throughout the year, but no other company came close to dethroning ChatGPT in terms of new users. Gemini has a large number of users, but it’s still dwarfed by ChatGPT. Other companies like Microsoft, Meta, Perplexity, etc., are pushing their chatbots hard, but they just can’t match ChatGPT in the market.

In comes DeepSeek out of left field with enough force to rattle OpenAI. It’s currently the second-most-used chatbot in the world, and it has quickly surpassed most of the competition. While it’s growing faster than ChatGPT, it still has a long way to go if it wants to have more visits in total.

Last month, ChatGPT raked in more than 5.2 billion visits, which is more than 6x the number of visits that DeepSeek got. However, it was able to put Gemini (139.4 million visits) and Claude (111.9 million visits) to shame.

Where is DeepSeek more popular?

Last month, 54.53 million U.S. citizens visited DeepSeek, which made up just under 7% of the total pie. It was followed by Kenya (46.76 million), India (43.36 million), and Russia (41.45 million). However, those numbers pale in comparison to the number of users in China.

Last month, DeepSeek got 221.61 million visits in China. That’s 26% of the total number. That’s an increase of 193.29 million visits compared to January. Just the increase in users between January and February is more than the total users in the U.S., Kenya, India, and Russia combined.

By contrast, China isn’t even in the top five countries for ChatGPT. It gained 68 million visits while the U.S. gained 768.56 million. So, it seems that, between ChatGPT and DeepSeek, the biggest countries are the U.S., China, Kenya, and India.

This puts DeepSeek’s AI prowess in perspective. Despite the controversies, it’s still on the rise, so other companies are going to take note.
