Apple iPhone 17 Pro: Ultimate Preview Guide

The iPhone 17 Pro is set to debut this September, however, ahead of that announcement we have seen a ton of leaks and rumors about Apple’s next series of iPhones. You can check out our iPhone 17 Preview and our iPhone 17 Air Preview for more on those specific models. This preview is going to be all about the iPhone 17 Pro.

In this guide, we will be rounding up all of the leaks and rumors for the iPhone 17 Pro, which is slated to get some pretty big changes this year, specifically in terms of the cameras.

iPhone 17 Pro Specs

When it comes to the specs of the iPhone 17 Pro, we haven’t seen a lot of changes leaked. However, keep in mind that Apple tends to not focus on specs that much. With the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max having grown in display sizes last year, we expect that Apple will stick with a 6.3-inch and a 6.9-inch display for both models. It will also be powered by the new A19 Pro chipset. Which is said to be manufactured on TSMC’s latest 3nm process, N3P.

It’s also been reported that the iPhone 17 Pro will use a new vapor chamber cooling technology, which should help improve the thermal performance. This would help disperse heat across a larger surface area, to help prevent thermal throttling and to keep performance stable.

On the camera front, the main change is going to be the front-facing camera. Which will finally be upgraded to a 24-megapixel camera, across the entire iPhone 17 lineup. While the Pro models are expected to get an upgrade on the telephoto sensor, to 48-megapixels. That is going to end up being a bigger upgrade than it sounds, since that is a 5x telephoto sensor, and Apple would be quadrupling the resolution.

Rumors are suggesting that Apple could be making the iPhone 17 Pro thicker this year, so it can accommodate a larger battery, to improve battery life. Though charging is expected to increase, it’ll still be relatively slow at 35W across the entire line.

iPhone 17 Pro Design

The biggest change to the iPhone 17 Pro’s design is going to be the camera bump. Apple is reportedly going to take over the entire top third of the backside of the phone for the camera area. With the entire area being raised, though the cameras would stick to the left side of the phone. The cameras have stayed on that side, because of how thick the Face ID module is. Meaning that it can’t have a rear camera on the other side.

This is a design change we’re seeing on all of the new iPhone 17 models, except for the base model for some reason. Even the iPhone 17 Air is getting a camera bar, which seems to be looking more and more like the Huawei Nexus 6P with every leak.

The top part with the cameras are said to be glass, which means that’s a fairly large glass area that could break very easily. We’ve seen a lot of different renders and so-called leaks over the past few months. So we’ll have to wait and see how it holds up, come September.

iPhone 17 Pro Connectivity

The iPhone 17 Pro will stick with the Qualcomm 5G Modem. Apple has been using Qualcomm for its modems over the last few years, though Apple did just launch its own in-house modem, the C1, with the iPhone 16e. Unfortunately, that is going to be reserved for the iPhone 17 Air, and not come to the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup.

Additionally, we expect that the iPhone 17 Pro will have WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 support. So not many surprises here when it comes to connectivity.

iPhone 17 Pro Camera

As mentioned already, the two major upgrades we expect to see on the iPhone 17 Pro camera is going to be the telephoto being upgraded to a 48-megapixel sensor. And the front-facing camera is being upgraded to a 24-megapixel sensor. The telephoto is arguably the bigger deal here since that would quadruple the resolution for the 5x tetraprism sensor, and hopefully bring us a huge improvement. Currently, the 5x lens is pretty mediocre.

There has also been talk of the iPhone 17 Pro having a mechanical aperture, that would allow users to adjust the size of the aperture and tweak the amount of light that reaches the lens. Typically, a change like this happens on the iPhone 17 Pro Max first, as it would allow Apple to have more space for something like this. Similar to when Apple first introduced the tetraprism lens for the 5x telephoto camera. That was only on the Pro Max model, then later moved to the smaller Pro model.

iPhone 17 Pro Battery and Charging

Apple is rumored to be sticking a larger battery into the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max this year, resulting in thicker iPhones. Though, we don’t yet know the exact size of the battery. Apple typically increases the battery size every year, but this year it seems to be a much bigger jump, given the increase in thickness.

Rumors are also floating around that Apple is going to increase the charging speed to 35W for the iPhone 17 series. That would be a modest increase from the iPhone 16 series which charges at 30W. Additionally, Apple has been testing 7.5W reverse wireless charging for the iPhone 17 Pro. Currently, reverse wireless charging is limited to 4.5W on the iPhone.

iPhone 17 Pro Price

Some rumors floating around about the price of the iPhone 17 Pro put it at the same price as the base model has been for the last several years. That means it’s likely to remain at $999. Giving it a $200 gap between it and the iPhone 17. With the iPhone 17 Air starting at $899, it wouldn’t be too crazy to see the iPhone 17 Pro cost more this year. But that doesn’t seem to be in the cards this time around.

The Pro models are also expected to keep the same pricing, $999 for the iPhone 17 Pro and $1,199 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Launch Date

Apple typically announces the new iPhone in September. Usually a week after Labor Day, and we expect the same timeline this year. However, with new models, Apple typically starts shipping those a little later. So iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max could all ship in late September. With the iPhone 17 Air shipping a bit later, or into October.
