Summary: Meta is doubling down on its ambitions for smart glasses with a new Ray-Ban model that includes a built-in display, codenamed “Hypernova.” Rumors suggest Meta will price it between $1,000 and $1,400, a major jump from the current $299 version. A second-gen model with dual screens is also already in the works for 2027.
Following Google Glass’s dismal failure, we’re surprised to see how well Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses were received. But you know, maybe Google was just ahead of its time. That said, Meta is upgrading these smart glasses by adding a display in the next version.
Ray-Ban smart glasses with display
According to a Bloomberg report, Meta is developing a new pair of Ray-Ban smart glasses with a built-in display codenamed “Hypernova.” The current pair of Ray-Ban smart glasses does not come with a display. There are built-in cameras, which are great for taking photos and videos, and a built-in speaker and microphone, perfect for taking calls.
However, the report claims that Meta is getting ready to unveil a new and upgraded model as soon as this year. This will be Meta’s first pair of smart glasses that comes with a display, and it won’t come cheap either. According to Meta employees, they are estimating that these smart glasses will cost at least $1,000 and possibly run up to $1,300 or $1,400 depending on the configuration.
This is a stark contrast to the $299 price tag of the current Ray-Ban smart glasses. The $299 price tag is definitely part of its appeal, so we’re not sure if bumping it up to $1,000 will see Meta enjoy the same level of sales.
Meta’s smart glasses push
Meta still has more projects in development. The company is reportedly already working on a second-generation version of these smart glasses, codenamed “Hypernova 2.” This pair will sport dual screens, one for each eye. It will debut in 2027, and we’re already dreading the cost.
Meta is definitely pushing for smart glasses to become the next big thing in computing. A report from January revealed that Meta is developing at least three pairs of smart glasses. Aside from the Hypernova, Meta is working on a pair of augmented reality glasses codenamed “Orion.” It will feature AI integration and eye, hand, and neural tracking features.
We’ve also heard that Meta is working on a pair of smart glasses that have a more sporty design. Rumor has it that Meta is collaborating with Oakley on this.
