OpenAI will launch a new open AI model this year

It seems that OpenAI will be making a change in its approach to developing AI models. ChatGPT models have traditionally been closed for years. However, AI platforms that use an open approach, such as DeepSeek and Meta, have shown notable growth and adoption. So, OpenAI will be betting more on open-source by releasing its first open AI model since GPT-2.
A new open AI model from OpenAI will arrive in the coming months
OpenAI recently shared a survey on its website. The form seeks feedback from developers and the community at large regarding the release of an open AI model. It includes questions such as “What would you like to see in an open-weight model from OpenAI?” and “What open models have you used in the past?” as reported by TechCrunch. This model will not replace the main GPT closed lineup but will be an alternative.
The website says, “We’re excited to collaborate with developers, researchers, and the broader community to gather input and make this model as useful as possible.” There’s no specific date for the model’s arrival. However, we know it will happen “in the coming months.”
According to the report, OpenAI’s new open AI model will have reasoning capabilities similar to those of OpenAI’s o3-mini. So, while it won’t offer the most powerful features available, it will be quite capable and fast. As usual, the company is expected to release demo prototypes of the model before a wide rollout.
OpenAI will hold a developer event in San Francisco in the coming weeks. It’s quite likely the company will reveal more information about this open AI model there. Similar events will also be held in Europe and Asia-Pacific later.
A change of plans
OpenAI’s move appears to mark a change in the company’s planning. In February, Altman had said that they would focus even more on developing closed-source tools. However, now OpenAI could maintain an open and a closed branch of its GPT models starting this year.
“[B]efore release, we will evaluate this model according [to] our preparedness framework, like we would for any other model,” Altman stated. “[A]nd we will do extra work given that we know this model will be modified post-release […] [W]e’re excited to see what developers build and how large companies and governments use it where they prefer to run a model themselves,” he added.
