Summary: A new Samsung patent describes a quad-foldable phone that integrates up to three hinges along its body. This type of design would enable multiple form factors and use cases, making it more versatile than current foldables.

Samsung is probably the big tech company with the most experience in the development and implementation of foldable displays. It was one of the main drivers of this type of display, launching its first Galaxy Fold in 2019. Since then, the firm has launched several generations of similar devices, also including the “Flip” form factor. That said, Samsung is even experimenting with quad-foldable devices, according to a patent.

Samsung wants to invest more in innovation in certain segments to turn around the difficult situation it is facing. The company’s stock is stagnant, and shareholders are demanding solutions. The answer to this could be an affordable Z Flip phone and a tri-fold device, expected to arrive this year. However, a phone with a multi-fold design described in the patent discovered by Xpertpick seems the most interesting of all.

Samsung has patented a quad-foldable phone

The device patented by the South Korean giant is not content with offering two hinges; it integrates up to three folding zones. This particular form factor enables multiple potential use cases. The main one could be to make a device the size of a real tablet fit in our pocket. When folded, you could use it like a normal smartphone. Of course, this would result in a “fat” profile when the device is fully folded.

Additionally, the additional hinge could allow the device to be unfolded into a small tablet. You only need to fold one of the device’s sections. This could enable an aspect ratio similar to the 4:3 of iPads. It could even be possible to run multiple apps simultaneously on different sections of the foldable screen.

The patent for Samsung’s quad-foldable phone also addresses its durability. Each hinge incorporates technology designed to minimize the impact each time you fold or unfold the device, as well as to reduce the crease in the display.

To date, there are no leaks regarding a similar product from Samsung. As with all patents, there is no guarantee that the device will reach the market as is. However, Samsung could use some of the technologies explored in its commercial foldables.
