Summary: According to a new report, Samsung is developing an upgraded version of solid-state batteries, as it wants to use the new battery tech in its future wearables, including the Galaxy Ring, Buds, and Watch.
Samsung’s current lineup of wearables, including the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch, and Galaxy Buds, all use lithium-ion batteries. Well, that’s going to change very soon, at least for the Galaxy Ring. Samsung is reportedly looking to use a new battery tech in its wearables, which it has been developing for quite some time.
Samsung is reportedly working on new battery tech for the Galaxy Ring, Buds, and Watch
Earlier in the day, a Korean news outlet, Money Today, exclusively reported that Samsung wants to use “all solid-state battery” in multiple Galaxy wearables. The company is looking to introduce this new battery tech to the next-gen Galaxy Ring in Q4 2025.
The report mentions that, unlike lithium-ion batteries, which use liquid electrolytes, solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes. One of the major benefits of using the latter in wearables is that it reduces the risk of fire. What’s more interesting is that they can be quite flexible in shape and can achieve higher battery density.
Samsung has already developed a solid-state battery having an energy density of around 200Wh/L. However, the company is reportedly developing an improved version of the same, which can hold up to 360Wh/L of energy.
The decision might not be financially viable
Since solid-state batteries are expensive, the profitability remains a major concern for the tech giant. As mentioned earlier, the Galaxy Ring isn’t the only wearable getting the new battery tech; Samsung plans to use it in the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds as well. The report also speculates that the future Galaxy Buds using solid-state batteries could debut as soon as 2026. Moreover, the Galaxy Watch with the new battery tech could be launched as early as 2027.
