Remember the PR nightmare Samsung landed itself in when its foldable phone was released? Yeah, Apple doesn’t want any of that. This might be why the company is taking its time with its foldable phone. The firm reportedly wants to make it as crease-less as possible, as well as durable. Now, according to the latest report, Apple will use a metallic glass hinge for the iPhone Fold.
Liquid metal iPhone
Weibo tipster Instant Digital says that Apple has chosen to use metallic glass, also known as amorphous metal or liquid metal, for the hinge of the alleged iPhone Fold. It’s an interesting material of choice, but there’s a good reason for it.
You see, unlike traditional metals that have a regular, repeating crystalline atomic structure, metallic glass has a disordered arrangement of atoms. This unique arrangement makes it highly resistant to bending, deformation, and denting. This means that for foldable phones, it’s all kinds of perfect. After all, when it comes to foldable devices, the hinge is one of the key components that makes or breaks (quite literally) the device.
The material is also corrosion-resistant, which will extend its longevity under various conditions. Plus, it offers the added benefit of sporting a smooth, glossy finish like stainless steel, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
The foldable iPhone specs so far
Apple has kept mum about the development of its foldable iPhone. However, we have heard multiple rumors about the handset. The list includes a 7.8-inch main foldable display, along with a 5.5-inch cover screen.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously reported that the handset will sport a dual camera setup on the back and a single front-facing camera. It will also use Touch ID. It appears that Apple didn’t include Face ID because of how thin the phone is, making it difficult to squeeze in the necessary components.
Apple will launch its foldable iPhone in 2026, and it will cost around $2,000. This is incredibly expensive, but unsurprisingly so, given that it’s Apple we’re talking about.
