X allegedly hit by MASSIVE data leak involving 2.87 billion users
X aka Twitter Feed

Summary: An alleged data leak has exposed the profile data of nearly 2.87 billion X users, which weighs 400GB in size and includes details like user IDs, display names, follower counts, and more. An unhappy X employee apparently stole all the data during the company’s mass layoff phase. X hasn’t acknowledged any such breach as of now. But if it does, it would be the biggest in history.

Cybersecurity, which was once considered a luxury, has now become a necessity. Although companies do their bit to secure their systems, bad actors infiltrate them to access sensitive data using new techniques. In 2023, X (FKA Twitter) suffered a big data breach that exposed details like email addresses, display names, and usernames, affecting 209 million users. X, at the time, said the leaked details were not sensitive and mostly contained publicly available data. Well, another massive data leak has come to light, exposing the profile data of billions of X users.

The news spread like wildfire after a report by HackerRead surfaced online. The leaked data reportedly surfaced on Breach Forums, an infamous forum known for data breaches and discussions. According to a post by forum user ThinkingOne, one of X’s employees stole the data during the company’s mass layoff phase and later leaked it.

If we go by size, the forum user tells us that the leaked data weighs around 400GB. This suggests that the scope of the latest data leak at X is far wider than the one company acknowledged in 2023. While the latest leak exposes the profile data of 2.87 billion users, it doesn’t contain email addresses and phone numbers.

So, what has leaked? User IDs, display names, profile descriptions, profile URLs, location and time zone settings, follower count, tweet count, friend count—you name it! Everything related to the user profile has been exposed.

The company has yet to acknowledge the alleged incident

Anyone who follows X closely would likely suspect something is off with this data leak. How can a social media app with millions of users have its data leaked in the billions? A possible reason for this is that the new dataset may contain the profile details of the deleted or banned accounts, contributing to a whopping total.

X appears to be unaware of the data leak or hasn’t acknowledged any breach at the time of writing. If it turns out to be true, it would be the biggest data leak in history. This is something Elon Musk wouldn’t want to associate himself with, but that’s inevitable.
