Summary: Intel recently held an event in China where it showed off some AI capabilities of its new mobile CPU. The Intel Core Ultra 200HX features a Neural Processing Unit that has AI assistance features for certain games, such as Black Myth: Wukong.
When you think about AI technology and how it can help you in computing, you may not think about it giving you assistance inside of the games you play, but that seems to be exactly what the latest mobile Intel CPU is capable of.
Intel’s Core Ultra 200HX CPU, to be precise. Through the power of the CPU’s Neural Processing Unit, AI assistance features can help you beat that difficult boss. The information comes from a post on Weibo referencing a demonstration by Intel at an event in China. The mobile processor is shown to harness the NPU to give assistance for Black Myth: Wukong, though it could work with other games as well.
All of that really depends on the game developer and whether or not they incorporate things like that in. ASUS’s ROG Phone 9 series devices have a similar set of features that use AI for certain in-game tasks. In League of Legends: Wild Rift, for example, the phone’s AI capabilities can level up skills for you so you don’t have to worry about doing it in the heat of the moment. You do have to choose these skills beforehand, though, so the AI knows what to upgrade when the time comes.
Intel AI game assistance can help you learn about the game
The morals of having AI help you with a game aside, Intel’s application for AI assistance within games isn’t actually beating the boss for you. It’s not taking over the controls and playing the game. What it appears to be doing is offering information that can help you overcome a difficult in-game challenge. For the Black Myth: Wukong demo, it’s said that the AI assistance features can help teach you about the game world and its mechanics.
Black Myth: Wukong has a number of challenging boss fights. So, if you’re stuck on one in particular, the AI assistance features can reportedly tell you about the mechanics of that boss. That would essentially give you a leg up and know what to look for. Then the next time you take a stab at beating it, you might know exactly when to dodge that incoming attack.
It’s an interesting concept for improving the game experience for players. And it would make sense if this kind of feature were more widely adopted as time goes on.
Intel also claims the new CPU boosts gaming performance with the NPU
In addition to adding some interesting AI assistance features, Intel says the Core Ultra 200HX’s NPU boosts gaming performance. Intel showed off a few slides comparing frames per second in Black Myth: Wukong. One of those slides shows the AI assistant working across the CPU, NPU, and GPU. This helps deliver a frame rate of 108 frames per second.
But when the assistant works only on the GPU, the frame rate is at 94 frames per second. A third slide then displays the frame rate at 103 frames per second without the AI assistance enabled. It’s not immediately clear what real-world performance will be like. Since this demonstration was done under specific conditions, consumers might have a different experience. But it seems Intel is keen on showcasing what the AI assistance can do for gamers.
